Recommended routes through the festival week

Struggling to put together a program for this year’s Oslo Pix Film Festival? We’ve created three different routes to make planning easier for you.

Route 1: Strange films you’ll only see at the festival

Do you want to experience films that really push you out of your comfort zone? In this route you’ll find everything from AI-Herzog and quirky dramedies about school shootings and existential life crises. Each day we present a film you’re unlikely to see outside the festival.

Monday 25.08 – HOW TO BE NORMAL AND THE ODDNESS OF THE OTHER WORLD

How to Be Normal and the Oddness of the Other World

On the first day of the festival we recommend HOW TO BE NORMAL AND THE ODDNESS OF THE OTHER WORLD. After being discharged from a psychiatric hospital, Pia moves back home and must navigate life’s many challenges while dealing with her own mental health. The film screens at Klingenberg 2 at 18:00.

Tuesday 26.08 – DRAGONFLY

Dragonfly

On the second day we recommend DRAGONFLY, a film that combines British social realism with a Hitchcockian thriller, featuring powerful performances at its core. The film screens at Klingenberg 1 at 20:45.

Wednesday 27.08 – OUR HERO, BALTHAZAR

Our Hero Balthazar

On Wednesday we recommend OUR HERO, BALTHAZAR. The film follows Balthazar, who encounters a boy online claiming he will carry out a school shooting – and becomes convinced he can stop it from happening. The film screens at Klingenberg 4 at 17:45.

Thursday 28.08 – ABOUT A HERO

About a Hero

Thursday afternoon we recommend ABOUT A HERO, an inventive film about an AI version of Werner Herzog who must solve a crime case based on a script written by artificial intelligence. The film screens at Vega 2 at 15:45.

Friday 29.08 – MAGIC FARM

Magic Farm

On Friday we recommend MAGIC FARM. A hip documentary team from New York travels to Argentina to make a film about a famous musician – but ends up in the wrong country. This quirky dramedy screens at Klingenberg 4 at 17:45.

Saturday 30.08 – MOTHER’S BABY

Mothers baby

On the festival’s penultimate day we recommend MOTHER’S BABY, a disturbing thriller about Julia and Georg, who have just had a baby. Julia begins to feel that something isn’t right – what if the child she has isn’t really hers? The film screens at Vega 2 at 20:45.

Sunday 31.08 – ARI

Ari

End the festival with ARI. After quitting his teaching job, Ari is thrown out of his home and must navigate life’s uncertainties. The film screens at Tancred, Cinemateket at 17:00.

Route 2: Films that spark conversation

Here we’ve gathered films that make you think – and invite long discussions afterward. From Egyptian power struggles and Danish relationship dramas to films and panels about understaffed hospitals, these are works that stay with you and demand to be talked about.

Monday 25.08 – CHRISTY

Christy

On the first day we recommend CHRISTY, a heartfelt drama about two brothers who lost touch after a troubled childhood, but suddenly find themselves living under the same roof again. The film screens at Klingenberg 2 at 20:30.

Tuesday 26.08 – EAGLES OF THE REPUBLIC

Eagles of the Republic

On the second day we recommend the thriller EAGLES OF THE REPUBLIC. Egypt’s most beloved actor, George Fahmy, falls out with the authorities overnight. Facing the loss of everything, he takes on a risky acting assignment. Director Tarik Saleh will attend. The film screens at Vega 1 at 20:00.

Wednesday 27.08 – SORRY, BABY

Sorry Baby

On the third day we recommend the American indie SORRY, BABY. The film follows Agnes, a young woman who has survived assault. Told in fragments like a puzzle, it portrays both the vulnerability and the resilience in her process of healing. The film screens at Vega 2 at 18:15.

Thursday 28.08 – LATE SHIFT with panel discussion

Kveldsvakt

On Thursday we recommend LATE SHIFT, followed by the panel «When Care Meets the System’s Limits.» The film tells the story of Floria, a nurse working in a ward permanently short on staff and resources. The discussion afterward will address the state of Norwegian hospitals. The film screens at Tancred, Cinemateket at 18:00.

The conversation will be in Norwegian. 

Friday 29.08 – BEGYNDELSER

Begyndelser

On Friday evening we recommend BEGINNINGS, a powerful Danish drama about Ane and Thomas, a couple on the brink of separation. When Ane suffers a stroke, everything is put on hold. The film will be introduced by lead actress Trine Dyrholm and screens at Klingenberg 1 at 20:45.

Saturday 30.08 – HENDEN

Henden

On Saturday evening we recommend HENDEN, about war photographer Harald Henden’s final year and his battle with cancer. After the screening there will be a conversation with photographer Espen Rasmussen, Lindis Hurum (Doctors Without Borders Norway), and Harald Henden’s lifelong friend, Morten Rostrup. The film screens at Tancred, Cinemateket at 18:00.

Sunday 31.08 – ELLIS PARK

Ellis Park

End the festival with the documentary ELLIS PARK. The film follows musician Warren Ellis, Nick Cave’s longtime bandmate, as he runs a wildlife reserve in Sumatra – while simultaneously experimenting with synth and electric violin sounds.

Route 3: Artistically ambitious films

For those who want to see films that truly strive for artistic vision. Here you’ll find everything from intimate artist portraits to daring historical dramas and playful experiments with film history.

Monday 25.08 – PETER HUJAR’S DAY

Peter Hujars Day

Didn’t get a ticket to the opening film? PETER HUJAR’S DAY is an excellent alternative. The film is a portrait of photographer Peter Hujar through a conversation with writer Linda Rosenkrantz. It screens at Vega 1 at 21:00.

Tuesday 26.08 – TWO TIMES JOÃO LIBERADA

Two Times Joao Liberada

On the second day we recommend TWO TIMES JOÃO LIBERADA, an exploratory and ambitious Portuguese film about João, who plays the lead role in a biopic about Liberada – a nun who broke gender norms and was persecuted during the Inquisition. The film screens at Klingenberg 2 at 18:30.

Wednesday 27.08 – THEY WILL BE DUST

They Will Be Dust

On Wednesday you can head to Dansens Hus to see THEY WILL BE DUST, a rare musical about assisted dying. The film screens at 17:00.

Thursday 28.08 – HARVEST

Harvest

On Thursday we recommend HARVEST. A mysterious fire breaks out in a small village. Three strangers are accused, and the woman among them is branded a witch. The film screens at Vega 2 at 20:15.

Friday 29.08 – NOUVELLE VAGUE

Nouvelle Vague

On Friday you can catch NOUVELLE VAGUE, Richard Linklater’s latest film. It plays with film history, aesthetics, and nostalgia in a story about the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s BREATHLESS (1960). The film screens at Vega 1 at 20:15.

Saturday 30.08 – KIKA

Kika

On the festival’s penultimate day we recommend KIKA, a French drama about a woman who loses her partner while pregnant with their second child. Grieving and broke, she must find a way to survive. The film screens at Vega 3 at 18:30.

Sunday 31.08 – TOXIC

Toxic

On the final festival day we recommend TOXIC. The film follows teenagers Marija and Kristina, who enroll in a local modeling school where their bodies are pushed to the extreme. The film screens at Vega 1 at 15:15.
