Eagles of the Republic

Egypt’s most beloved actor, George Fahmy, falls out with the authorities overnight. On the verge of losing everything, he is forced to take on a high-risk acting role.

The assignment is to portray Egypt’s president in a state-funded propaganda film. Reluctantly, he accepts the role and is thrown into the inner circles of power. Like a moth drawn to the flame, he begins an affair with the mysterious wife of the general in charge of the film.

Eagles of the Republic, the third collaboration between Tarek Saleh and Fares Fares, had its world premiere in the main competition at Cannes earlier this year. Bold and timely, the film explores censorship and artistic freedom in today’s Egypt.

Following the screening at Vega 1 on Tuesday 26.08 at 20.00, there will be a conversation with the film’s director, Tarik Saleh, and film critic Ida Hestman Madsen.

Saleh will also take part in a director’s talk after the screening at Klingenberg 2 on Wednesday 27.08 at 17.45.
