The Recovery Channel
In THE RECOVERY CHANNEL, director Ellen Ugelstad takes us into a fictional news channel that delves into mental health, human rights, and coercion.
With this as a starting point, the film sheds light on the challenges related to modern psychiatric treatment and what it means to be deprived of one's freedom. Additionally, we follow the editorial meetings of the TV channel and Randi's life off-air, who loses contact with her mentally ill sister, Ylva. The Recovery Channel is both a personal and political project. The film is based on filmmaker Ellen Ugelstad's own experiences as a caregiver for over 25 years.
The Recovery Channel was presented as a work-in-progress at the Oslo Pix Film Festival in 2022 and will have its world premiere at this year's festival.
Director Ellen Ugelstad stands out in her filmmaking with her personal connection to the subject matter. Through her previous films, including Indian Summer, where she followed her brother with a camera for seven years, and in the film essay Making Sense Together, Ugelstad has established herself as a skilled filmmaker who dares to explore complex themes in new formats and genres.
