Rising theatre star Adura Onashile makes her directorial feature debut with this exploration of a unique relationship between mother and daughter. GIRL is a double-edged tale of coming of age, as well as letting go of the past.

Grace and Ama are mother and daughter, but also one another’s closest, and only, friend. Closed off from the world beyond their flat they feel safe, but outside worry reigns. Pressured by their social worker, Grace agrees to send her daughter back to school. As Ama gets to know the outside world and takes her first steps toward adulthood, the troubled Grace must navigate her past in order to prevent her own trauma from passing on to her daughter.

Visually gorgeous, Girl is an intimate and quiet portrayal of heavy themes, elevated by excellent acting from Déborah Lukumuena and Le'Shantey Bonsu. Mother and child are portrayed with noteworthy emotion, which along with the serene score brings director Onashile’s minimalist, yet potent, script to life.

«It’s a poignant film that doesn’t get unnecessarily dark, instead choosing to highlight the importance of focusing on the light, asking for help and reminding us that the best version of yourself is one that feels safe and loved.»
