A cinematic celebration of the powwow – a traditional gathering of Indigenous peoples in North America that honours the culture through music and dance.
POWWOW PEOPLE is a fly-on-the-wall documentary following a powwow. Rather than being mere observers, the filmmakers organised the powwow themselves, inviting the various participants to create something together. The film follows the event over the course of one day, from morning to evening, and the four participants, Gina Bluebird, Ruben Littlehead, Jamie John and Freddie Cozad, before culminating in an impressive 30-minute single take.
This is a unique and grand celebration of the powwow as a cultural expression, and within the film's very existence lies a clear political statement about the rights of indigenous peoples to self-determination.
Dansens Hus X Oslo Pix Film Festival
The film is shown in collaboration with Dansens Hus. On Wednesday 26.08, two documentary films will be screened that in different ways tell the story of how the history and traditions of North American indigenous peoples endure in the world, both on others' and their own terms. Between the screenings of the films AANIKOOBIJIGAN [ANCESTOR/GREAT-GRANDPARENT/GREAT-GRANDCHILD] and POWWOW PEOPLE, there will be a conversation.
