Author Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika travel through a Germany in ruins after the Second World War.
The director of IDA and COLD WAR is back with a new, powerful drama about the postwar era. It is 1949, and the wounds of the Second World War are still wide open. The Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann is back in Germany after having emigrated to California when the Nazis came to power. He is set to receive an award for his body of work in Frankfurt, on the American-controlled side of Germany, but is also set to receive an award in Weimar, on the Soviet side. His daughter Erika – well played by Sandra Hüller – joins him on the road trip, and the family's underlying conflicts are slowly revealed.
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Best Director award.
