Sandra Hüller shines in this beautiful period drama that earned her the Best Actor Award at the Berlinale.

Rose moves to a small, ascetic Protestant village in Germany in the 1600s. Here, she has chosen to live her life as a man. As she puts it herself: «There is more freedom in trousers, and they're just a piece of cloth, so I put them on.» The villagers are sceptical of the newcomer at first, but gradually come to accept her thanks to her strong work ethic and regular church attendance.

ROSE is a clever exploration of gender privilege and a rare example of a film that's accomplished in every respect, while also managing to be surprisingly funny despite its heavy subject matter. The production design and costumes are authentic, and the black-and-white cinematography is beautifully composed. Hüller also delivers one of her strongest performances, which earned her the Best Actress award at the Berlin Film Festival.
