A squad of teenage girls must protect their home as shapeshifting aliens invade it. SLASH/BACK is a charming sci-fi horror, with plenty of love for the community it portrays.

Maika and her friends live in Pangnirut, a small fishing hamlet in Nunavut, close to the Arctic circle. She cannot wait until the day she can finally leave for the city and forget about the life up north with all its silly traditions and fairy tales. (Un)fortunately, life in Pang is about to become everything but boring as extraterrestrial creatures threaten to annihilate the small population, and the girls must gear up for war.

Slash/Back combines its use of sci-fi and horror tropes to tell a tale of Inuit identity and the value of their traditional knowledge, as well as one of friendship, bravery, and simply being a teenager. That it all takes place on the gorgeous Baffin Island is a nice additional treat for the eyes.

«While the lo-fi CGI creatures reveal the film’s low budget, it more than makes up for it with some truly gnarly fight sequences in the back half. The girls from Pang seriously kick ass, and I can’t wait to see what Innuksuk does next.»
