Bubble

This year's nominee for the Nordic Council Film Prize from Finland.

Bubble tells the story of 16-year-old small-town girl Eveliina, who feels like her whole world is collapsing when she discovers that her mother is having an affair with another woman. Like all teenagers around her, Eveliina is very liberal and wants to have her own freedom of thought and action, but this idea doesn't really extend to her own parents. She tries to stop her mother's affair at any cost and make her parents fall in love again, with both dramatic and comedic consequences. At the same time, schoolmate Joni also sparks interest and irritation, adding another disruptive element.

This is an entertaining, raw, and immersive portrayal of Eveliina's passage into adulthood. Salmenperä's direction captures natural observations of the tensions between the people in this small town. The film shows that there is always something beautiful, even when things seem dark.

About The Nordic Council’s Film Prize

The purpose of The Nordic Council’s Film Prize is to promote Nordic film production, the Region’s film market and the long-term international position of Nordic film.

It is awarded to a full-length feature that has roots in Nordic culture and displays high standards of artistic quality and originality. Innovation is also weighted heavily. The films nominated should preferably be in one of the Nordic languages.

Director

Aleksi Salmenperä is a Finnish filmmaker whose works have premiered in major film festivals such as Berlinale (A Bad Family, 2009), HotDocs (Alcan Highway, 2013) and San Sebastian (A Man’s Job, 2007). He won the Finnish film award Jussi for Best Director with Distractions (2015) and Void (2018) which was also named Best Film. His most recent film, Bubble, was recently nominated for The Nordic Council’s Film Prize.
