War Sailor

This year's nominee for the Nordic Council Film Prize from Norway.

Krigsseileren is Norway's most expensive feature film - a magnificent drama starring Kristoffer Joner, Ine Marie Wilmann, and Pål Sverre Hagen in the lead roles. It tells the story of the wartime sailors and their families' fates during and after World War II. We follow the sailor Alfred, a working-class guy and a newly minted father of three. When the war breaks out, he and his friend Sigbjørn are working on a merchant ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. They are ordered to the frontlines in a war they didn't ask for, in civilian clothes and without weapons. The two men struggle to survive in a downward spiral of violence and death, where German submarines can attack the ship loaded with supplies crucial to the Allies' war effort at any moment. The wartime sailors have one goal: to survive - and make it back home.

About The Nordic Council’s Film Prize

The purpose of The Nordic Council’s Film Prize is to promote Nordic film production, the Region’s film market and the long-term international position of Nordic film.

It is awarded to a full-length feature that has roots in Nordic culture and displays high standards of artistic quality and originality. Innovation is also weighted heavily. The films nominated should preferably be in one of the Nordic languages.

Director

Gunnar Vikene (b. 1966) is a Norwegian film director and screenwriter. He made his debut as a feature film director with Himmelfall (2002). Since then, he has directed films such as Trigger (2006) and Vegas (2009). In television, he has directed several episodes of shows like Okkupert (2019-2020) and Pørni (2021). His latest feature film, War Sailor, was recently nominated for the Nordic Council Film Prize.
