Golden Bear Winner Alcarràs is a beautiful and moving depiction of children's encounter with the harsh realities of the adult world set in the Catalan countryside.

With Alcarràs, director Carla Simón once again shows that she is a masterful director of child actors. She clearly shows how the world of children and adults in many ways exists as two parallel realities that only occasionally touch each other. The film follows a large family of fruit farmers in the Catalan countryside who, when the landowner in the area dies, are informed that his descendants have decided to sell the land to a company that operates solar panels. Suddenly, their livelihood is in jeopardy, and the verbal agreement between the grandfather in the family and the landowner of the same age is worth nothing overnight. As a political backdrop is Spain's unfair treatment of small-scale farmers lurking.

This year's winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival is a film of contrasts. The adults' quarrels and despair over the situation largely bounce off the children, who are happy if they still get to go exploring among fruit bushes and run around freely both inside and out. Rarely has this been portrayed as genuinely and empathetically as here. Alcarràs is a film about real people with real challenges, and also feels transferable to Norwegian conditions, in a time of constantly new peasant demonstrations all over the country.
