About the movies:

SUSPIRIA (1977)

American Suzy Bannon arrives in Germany to become a student at a prestigious dance academy, but it doesn't take long before she realizes that far more dangerous things than dancing take place at the school. Wrapped in bright colors and deep shadows, Suspiria is a cinematic phantasmagoria that lacks parallel even today, almost 50 years later. With striking original music by the legendary prog rock band Goblin and a solid dose of morbid violence, it is undoubtedly one of the most iconic horror films of the 70s, and well worth catching on the big screen.

SUSPIRIA (2018)

1977, West Berlin. Shortly after a young woman disappears from Marko's Dance Academy, Susie Bannion becomes a student there. She quickly excels as a dancer, but something is brewing beneath the surface. The Academy's ancient secrets are emerging. Making a remake of a film as genre-defining as Argento's Suspira borders on blasphemous, and thankfully, that's not what this is. With a political sting and a much stronger focus on the dance itself, the film stands firmly on its own two feet. Lifted by hauntingly beautiful music from Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and dance choreography by Damien Jalet and Olivia Ancona, Guadagnino's Suspiria is a spellbinding dive into the occult.

Panel discussion between the screenings:

The witch on stage and on screen

The witch stands out as a feminist symbol - a resistance figure who counters masculine power structures and the patriarchy. With their association with sorcery, rituals and the supernatural, the depiction of witches often touches on the monstrous, mysterious and alien. Witchcraft is linked to the body and the ritual, aspects that are also leading within performing arts and various forms of dance practice.

In Oslo Pix on Art at Dansens Hus, feature films and documentaries are shown which all deal with dance and performance, feminism, the alternative and the supernatural. In this connection, a panel discussion is arranged about the witch, strong female figures, and how the witch ritual is linked to choreography, dance and performing arts. The moderator is Helene Aalborg, film promoter and art critic. The panel includes dancer Marie Ursin, stage artist Trine Falch, and film director Itonje Guttormsen.

This event is presented in collaboration with Dansens Hus and will be in Norwegian.
