Birgitte Sigmundstad
Birgitte Sigmundstad is a visual artist educated at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design in England, who primarily works with film.
Her films are essayistic and self-reflective, often rooted in historical events. Several works explore art history and the role of the artist, with a recurring focus on how art is used ideologically and as a tool for nation-building. ART AND NONART (2020) examines the nazified National Gallery’s 1942 exhibition, where modernist art was ridiculed and contrasted with constructive national romantic art, while HAMMERSBORG – PROTECTING THE BYGONE FUTURE (2016) explores the connection between the social democratic project and modernist architecture.
In recent years, Sigmundstad has worked on several films as part of a larger research project on the dissemination of Norway’s occupation history. The film WHAT WE TALK ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT WAR (2021) received the BKH Art Photography Prize at the Spring Exhibition in 2022.
