Bitter Christmas
Almodóvar's newest film weaves two stories together and asks how far it is acceptable for an artist to go to write a good story.
Raúl has writer's block. Whatever he does, he can't seem to get out of it. He's previously found inspiration in his boyfriend Santi, but that well is empty. When his loyal assistant, Mónica, has to take time off work to handle a personal crisis, he finds inspiration in her tragedy. The story Raúl is writing is about his alter ego, the filmmaker Elsa. She is also struggling to find her way back to that creative spark, and uses her friends' problems as material for her new film.
BITTER CHRISTMAS is the newest film by Pedro Almodóvar, and is one of his most self-reflexive films. It premiered in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
