Liv is a fashion model, and the film portrays a day in her life. It’s not a particularly special day; she takes a job, looks for an apartment, breaks up with one man and meets another.

That Norwegian cinema in the 1960s was inspired by the French New Wave is well exemplified by Pål Løkkeberg. He had studied film at IDHEC in Paris in the 1950s, and alongside the fact that Liv was shot on location, we find here a playful and spontaneous style that matches the young protagonist’s open attitude toward life. The film was a breakthrough for both Pål Løkkeberg as a director and Vibeke Løkkeberg as an actress, and it was also her first screenplay to be filmed.

Several Norwegian critics were very enthusiastic about the film, especially Sven Krohn in Aftenposten, who wrote: «Is it possible? Has it really happened? Has Norwegian cinema finally been lifted out of the conventional, provincial, unengaging and clichéd? Pål Løkkeberg’s first feature film promises as much. Not just promises – it is a sensation in new Norwegian cinema.»
