The Balconettes
Three friends face a night that changes everything during a scorching heatwave in Marseille. Noémie Merlant's BALCONETTES is a bloody, playful tale of revenge.
The three friends try to cool down on the balcony, overlooking the entire neighborhood. Everything seems idyllic, but beneath the surface, something is simmering. One evening, everything is turned upside down, developing into a bloody affair. Noémie Merlant, known to many from Portrait of a Lady on Fire, has written (in collaboration with Céline Sciamma), directed, and stars in The Balconettes, which premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The film playfully combines genre elements from comedy, drama, and horror.
«Ghost story, body horror, feminist comedy. Noémie Merlant, familiar as a fine actress from Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, packs a good deal into her sophomore feature as director. Pedro Almodovar looms over all these shenanigans, which could be read as “Women on the Verge of Heat Exhaustion."»
