Unruly
Unruly very deservedly won the award for Best Nordic Film at this year's Gothenburg Film Festival and is a visually brilliant and gripping masterpiece from one of Denmark's most promising directors.
Not unlike Jack Nicholson's fate in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), underage Maren (Koppel) is sent to an island for mentally disabled women in 1930s Denmark without any reasonable explanation. Here she gets to know several women, all of whom in their own way have had their dreams and dignity crushed by the Nurse Ratched-like doctor Wildenskov (Heinrichsen). The film is extremely well acted with several of Denmark's most talented young actors in the cast, and a reminder of how undignified mental illness has been treated in our recent history.
