Safe Place
What do you do when a loved one becomes their own worst enemy? What can even be done? The Croatian submission for last year’s Best Foreign Feature Academy Award is as accomplished as it is devastating in its portrayal of a family in disarray following a suicide attempt.
In Safe Place we follow Damir, his brother Bruno, and their mother in the 24 hours after Damir’s attempt to end his own life. As his brother and mother struggle to grapple with truth and figure out how to best care for him, Damir feels alienated by the institutions meant to help him. As the outside world keeps turning, the family has their lives irrevocably changed.
Juraj Lerotić makes a fiercely impressive feature debut directing, writing, and starring inSafe Place. It is nothing short of a crushing film, in no small part due to its grounded feel. The film received several awards during its festival run, among them the Best Actor, First Feature Award, and Best Emerging Director Award at Locarno International Film Festival.
«Safe Place» invites its audience to consider how intuitive we are to the pain of those we hold closest, how attentively we’re listening past what we like to hear, how safe we’re actually making the private places we share.»
