This year’s opening film at the Cannes Critics’ Week is a gentle heartbreaker chronicling the last summer a young girl spends with the woman who raised her.

Cléo is six years old and loves no one more than her nanny Gloria, but she also has her own children. Her daughter is awaiting her first child, and after her mother passes away, Gloria must return home to Cape Verde, never returning to her job as a nanny in Paris. For Cléo, who has made all her memories with Gloria, the imminent change is immense and frightening. Before her father hires a new nanny, she is given the opportunity to visit Gloria's home in Cape Verde, where they spend one final summer together.

With its beautiful animated sequences and child's point of view, Àma Gloria is not only a film about the beautiful bond between a child and her nanny but also touches on how this job affects families. Cléo, Gloria, and her children all face their own issues, and although they sometimes clash, director Marie Amachoukeli portrays them with a sense of understanding and goodwill.

«Employing a close-up frame, embedding painterly expression-filled tables and eliciting quite a performance from a person the littlest of actors, audiences will enter Cape Verde one way and leave with enormous life lessons learned. This is a remarkable, heartbreaker feel-good piece of cinema»
