Showgirls turns 25, and many of you are probably asking: why are we celebrating? One of the most notorious films in history was immediately stamped as pure trash by critics and audiences around the world when it was first screened in 1995. Still, the film has slowly but surely become cemented as a cult classic in the years following its release. This is what the documentary You don’t Nomi traces. Jeffrey McHale explores what has both been called Paul Verhoeven’s reimagining of All About Eve and a vulgar “trash opera” from different angles. Footage from behind the scenes and interviews with key players in the making of the film are used to shine a new light on the film. Is Showgirls a camp classic for a small, highly dedicated, group? Is it a misunderstood satirical masterpiece? Or is it simply a piece of shit?

Opinions vary widely, and there is probably not an easy answer to these questions. No matter what opinion you hold, or if you’re planning on watching Showgirls for the first time, this is an incredibly entertaining meditation on what our society views as good and bad taste. A perfect start to an evening with Nomi Malone!
