Danish Sherin Khankan and a group of like-minded Muslim activists want to open one of the first mosques in Europe to be lead by female imams. The members of the mosque share a dream of a revision of the Qur’an which is built on tolerance, equity, and Muslim feminism. This approach to their religion quickly brings the members of the group at odds with those who represent the more traditional, patriarchal readings and practice that is known from most forms of organised religion known today. This new mosque fight for women’s rights to get divorced, and for inter-religious marriages. Sherin and her allies must decide if they should fight from the side lines or stand in full view on the barricades – and if they can all stand together in the coming storm, despite some internal differences.

Khankan is a charismatic character, which ensures that the film and the storyline never get boring to follow. She is a woman of reason, with an unusually liberal approach to the Qur’an – and with bucketloads of confidence and faith in her own vision. The Reformist follows her through several years, on international journeys as well as quieter moments at home in Copenhagen. A fascinating look into an unusual life.
