Where does our food really come from? This seemingly simple question was the starting point for award winning author Jonathan Safran Foer’s non-fiction book Eating Animals back in 2009. This is the documentary based on that book, with Foer himself on the producing team – along with, amongst others, Natalie Portman. Portman has been an animals rights activist for years, and as the narrator in Eating Animals she helps shed some light on one of our time’s greatest global challenges: overproduction. The industrial production of meat, eggs and dairy has become cheaper and more available for everyone in the last few decades, while hardly anyone still owns their own animals from which to make food. This documentary examines the price of this development, both in environmental terms as well as human health – not to mention for animal welfare.

None of this is easily digested information, so thankfully Eating Animals also attempts to offer some alternative solutions. This is the movie to watch if you want to learn more about how your food habits affects the world around you, and how you as a consumer can help make a difference.
