THE HELSINKI EFFECT // How to Strengthen the Helsinki Effect?
In connection with the screening on Wednesday 27.08 at 18:15 in Vega 3, there will be a 30-minute conversation about the Helsinki Accords.
On August 1, 1975, the Helsinki Final Act was signed by the Soviet Union, the United States, Canada, and nearly all European countries. It set out norms for political and economic cooperation, cross-border human contact, and respect for human rights.
In many ways, the declaration marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War. In 1994, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) was established to strengthen its implementation. But does a «Helsinki effect» still exist in a Europe marked by war and democratic backsliding?

About the Film
The Cold War was at its freezing point when leaders from East and West met in Helsinki in the summer of 1975. Ford, Brezhnev, Palme, Tito – they were all there. In many ways, the world has returned to a similar cold war, but today, the dialogue about peace is absent. The Helsinki Effect is therefore a highly relevant and insightful documentary about political theater, historical turning points, and how the world is shaped – often quietly.
