Silence as Rehabilitation // PUNISHMENT
After the screening of PUNISHMENT on Sunday, 01.09.24, we invite you to a conversation about silence as a form of rehabilitation in the Norwegian correctional system.
What happens to the inmates in such a spiritual setting, and can they submit to a stricter regime than the one they already live under? We want to explore the political changes necessary for more inmates in Norway to be able to work on reconciliation during their sentences

About the film:
Since 2013, the Halden prison has conducted an annual retreat where inmates can voluntarily choose to live like monks. In Øystein Mamen's latest film, we follow four of them through a three-week program. Here, the inmates withdraw from the world and spend 21 days in silence, except for a half-hour conversation each day with the priest. No TV, radio, or other contact with the outside world is allowed, and instead, they participate in masses, prayer, and meditation.
The screening is done in collaboration with Medieoperatørene and is supported by the Fritt Ord Foundation.
