Labor Rights in the USA in 2024 // UNION
The day after we conclude this year's Oslo Pix Film Festival, on September 2nd, Labor Day is observed in the USA. In the documentary UNION, we meet ALU and its leader Chris Smalls, who fought a historic battle for better rights at his own workplace, Amazon.
The proportion of unionized workers in the private sector has significantly decreased in recent years. While many have to fight hard for their rights in workplaces in the USA, like Chris Smalls against Amazon, there are also some unions that have won their battles. We remember, for example, the prolonged strike by actors and writers in the film and TV industry in Hollywood.
So, what is the state of labor rights in the USA in 2024? What happens to the working class when global companies deny their employees rights? What are the differences between Norway and the USA? We meet Liv Tørres from the International Department at LO; she has extensively researched labor movements and believes in the power of collective bargaining.
