Monica Strømdahl
Monica Strømdahl is a Norwegian documentary filmmaker and photographer, with a background in photojournalism and a bachelor’s degree in fine art photography from Falmouth College of Arts. She works with both stills and film, and is interested in people and the everyday. Strømdahl is known for her intimate and observant style.
For over 15 years, she has documented the lives of people living in American motels. The photographs became part of the Norwegian Journal of Photography in 2019 and were exhibited at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter the same year. This long-term work culminated in her award-winning debut film FLOPHOUSE AMERICA.
The film had its world premiere at CPH:DOX in March 2025, where it received the DOX:AWARD Special Mention. Since then, it has been screened at festivals such as Visions du Réel (Nyon, Switzerland), Biografilm (Bologna, Italy), where it won the NEW TALENT AWARD, Movies that Matter (Netherlands), and Subversive Festival (Croatia), where it won BEST FEATURE DOCUMENTARY.
