11-year-old Katinka lives alone with her three siblings: Tristan at 15, 9-year-old Kirk, 6-year-old Petra, and the parrot, Captain Good Mood, in an apartment in Sølvgaten

Here, they can decide when they want to go to bed, whether they brush their teeth, and no one tells them to do their homework. It has been like this since their mother mysteriously disappeared one year earlier. 

But when their absent parents make the school inspector, Mr Moth, suspicious, the four siblings hatch a plan to avoid detection and being sent to an orphanage. They hire a housemaid named Miss Nelly, who not only helps the children with their grown-up problems, but also gives them a sense of being a proper family again.
