Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma
A director set to direct a sequel in a slasher franchise becomes obsessed with casting the original film's «final girl».
The filmmaker Kris (Hannah Einbinder from Hacks) travels to Canada to meet Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson in one of her best performances), the actor from the first film in the enormously popular slasher series Camp Miasma. The first film quickly attained legendary status, but after decades of weaker sequels, spin-offs and merch, the franchise is heading toward certain death. Kris wants to revive the horror classic and distance it from the misogyny and transphobia that have made it infamous.
Jane Schoenbrun follows I Saw the TV Glow with their best film so far, a hypnotic, funny and self-reflexive film about pop culture, identity, violence and sex, and how these things are so often intertwined.
The film was the opening film in Un Certain Regard earlier this year.
