On a winter's night in Holmlia, fifteen-year-old Benjamin loses his life, killed by nineteen-year-old Joe Erling, for no other reason than the colour of his skin.

The film depicts the lives of the two boys up to the murder, and Benjamin's mother during the court case. Benjamin grows up surrounded by friends and with a mom who takes care of him, while Joe Erling is shaped by an environment marked by neglect. Both live in low-status areas. Benjamin experiences being stigmatised by the police, and Joe Erling drifts into the neo-Nazi Boot Boys milieu in search of belonging.

THE MURDER OF BENJAMIN shows how vulnerable young boys are when trying to find themselves and where they belong – and how catastrophic the consequences can be when hatred is given room to grow.

25 years after the murder of Benjamin Hermansen, this is a story we still need to tell – about racism, loss, and the hope of reconciliation in a society that must not forget.
