BEYOND THE HILLS is an arresting and powerful drama about faith, guilt and freedom, and perhaps Cristian Mungiu's most visually accomplished and atmospheric film. The film is based on two books about a case of exorcism in the mid-2000s, which Mungiu adapted into a fictionalised story about two young women, Voichita and Alina, who grew up together. After living in different countries for a while, Alina seeks out Voichita, who has entered a convent. But when Alina tries to convince Voichita to leave with her, powerful forces are set in motion.
