Sara carries a secret no one knows about. On a school trip, she witnesses a sexual assault against a classmate, and the two girls become inextricably bound together.
The class is going on a bus trip from North Macedonia to Greece. The teachers are barely paying attention, and the partying and the boys' behaviour grow increasingly reckless. When their classmate Lina is assaulted, surrounded by classmates who choose to look the other way, Sara is the only one who intervenes. The friendship that forms binds the two girls together, and the solidarity between them becomes a vital shield in an environment where violence against women is normalised, and you are expected to keep your mouth shut about what happens.
17 is Kosara Mitić's feature debut, and it had its world premiere in Berlin earlier this year. The film is a realistic and unvarnished portrayal of the culture of silence that can follow an assault.
