13-year-old Alpha lives with her mother in 1980s France. A tattoo sparks fears that she has been infected with a mysterious illness spreading through society.
Those infected gradually turn to marble. Alpha is ostracized at school, while at home she grows closer to her heroin-addicted uncle, Amin. Julia Ducournau – previously known for the critically acclaimed cannibal film Raw and the Palme d’Or-winning Titane – returns with her third feature: an allegorical body horror drama about illness and the stigma that comes with it.
The film premiered in the main competition at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
