Showing Up
A sculptor does her best to prepare for her new exhibition as family, friends and animals cause her daily life to spiral into chaos.
Lizzy is a sculptor who works with clay, specifically creating sculptures of women in states of great joy or distress. She is preparing for her biggest exhibition so far, but getting it done would be easier if her family life was less chaotic and her apartment had hot water. Her parents are separated and dealing with their own problems while her brother Sean has become worryingly unstable. Meanwhile, her landlord and fellow artist Jo seem to prioritize everything but fixing her hot water, and when a wounded pigeon is added to Lizzy's responsibilities, she finds herself wondering if she will be able to finish her work in time for the exhibition at all.
Showing Up is another display of director Kelly Richard's remarkable ability to tell simple stories with a lot to say. Along for the ride are frequent collaborators Michelle Williams, who stars, and co-writer Jon Raymond.
«There’s beauty in seeing people rush to create and explore the depths of their imagination, later pouring them into their projects. That is why I love Reichardt’s latest: it captures those feelings with a humanistic grasp, capturing every emotion one feels before, during, and after the process of creation and innovation.Showing Up is a loving ode to what cinemagoers love the most and what all of us need in gloomy times: art and bonds that tie.»
