United Skates
Democracy in action and caught on tape! Because roller skates and democracy are actually two sides of the same coin, as you will realise after watching the energetic yet funereal documentary United Skates.
Across the US, indoor roller skating arenas have been an important social venue, especially for African Americans. Somewhere to hang out, meet relatives, talk politics, dance, and party. A venue where artists like Dr. Dre and Queen Latifah landed some of their very first gigs. A place in which to freely evolve as a citizen and as a human being. Every city has had its own style of skating – but now, the venues are being closed down at a record speed due to gentrification and increased rent. Or, it might be because of intricate rules that discriminate against people of colour by banning certain types of equipment and actions, which the film explains in fascinating detail.
United Skates has already won audience awards at many festivals in the US and elsewhere. With plenty of celebs in front of the camera alongside spectacular skate moves, this is a celebration of roller skating as community culture and art form. It does direct some nostalgic gazes to the past, but it also highlights just how important the roller skating still is – as a safe space for kids from cities marred by violent and destructive gang culture. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never had your feet anywhere near a pair of skates, this film is a must-see to understand more of contemporary American culture.
