Tolkien! The name is written in gold lettering across literary history, and the mere sound of it brings forth daydreams of fairy tales and legends, elves and hobbits, mythical worlds and unknown languages – and of course, the eternal battle between good and evil. But how did village boy John Ronald Reuel Tolkien become the man we now know him as; legendary linguist, poet and author of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion?

This biopic starring Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins aims to provide flesh and blood to the life of young Tolkien. No stranger to adversity and hardships, Tolkien uses everything he lives through in order to develop himself as a writer. His lived experiences of a tragic childhood as an orphan in pre-war London, his first love, close friendships with fellow students, and his encounter with the apocalyptic scenes of World War I all form the basis for what would later become some of literature’s best loved novels – and film adaptations.

Tolkien employs striking imagery which toys with the limitless imagination of the man himself, and plays with images which have remained some of the most iconic through the history of literature and film.
