Love, Simon
In the wake of audience hits like The Fault In Our Stars and Paper Towns, we finally get the first mainstream teen romance flick with a queer protagonist. Meet Simon Spier, a 17-year-old boy who hasn’t told a living soul that he’s gay. After an anonymous student at his school comes out of the closet via an online gossip site, Simon reaches out to him via email. The following correspondence between the two brings with it feelings and intrigue, perfectly assisted by the frameworks of a typical high school comedy.
The central narrative here is familiar and engaging, and is presented by a diverse cast. The lead actor in the role of Simon is Nick Robinson (Everything, Everything), while other central cast members include Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) and Jennifer Garner (Juno). The chemistry between the different actors is perhaps the very best thing about the film; there are no weak links, but rather just thoroughly believable relationships between family members as well as friends. The dialogue is equal parts funny and touching – so that both tears and laughter are both equally natural reactions when watching Love, Simon. This is simply the perfect teen flick to kick off the summer holidays.
