Architecture on film can be quite amazing. It is, at least, in the hands of filmmakers Paul Tunge and Egil Håskjold Larsen. At last year’s Pix, they screened their film Ad Astra, a virtuoso depiction of Norwegian churches, built in the architectural style known as brutalism.

Their project continues, with two new documentary short films. Bauta turns our gaze from the stars to the ground to look at everything from swimming pools to metro stations built in an equally monumental style. Odda is shot in one long take, and depicts an abandoned smeltery in Odda, a (former) industrial small town in Western Norway.

Odda and Bauta is nothing short of a cinematic discovery, and an homage to buildings and sites that are in a state of decay and/or not held in particularly high esteem by the public. There are few people in these films, and no talking, only the mesmerising score by artist Kim Hiorthøy. He will play live during the screening at Oslo Pix, so make sure to be there!
