Mette Line and Kristian have been happily married for 12 years, with two kids and a lovely house in the suburb Lyngby outside Copenhagen. But one day after work, Kristian is struck by a blood clot that blocks the blood supply to his brain, damaging a third of his brain function and deteriorating his physical and mental health. Who We Were is an intimate depiction of family life during the first year following the incident. Like a fly on the wall, we observe Kristian at the rehabilitation clinic as he fights to regain mobility and trying to be his old self again. In the meantime, Mette Line takes care of the children and refurnished the house so Kristian can come live there, all while struggling to accept his new personality. An extraordinarily honest and brave film about love – and about what happens when disaster strikes, changing the relationship to the ones we love and perhaps making it impossible to find our way back to who we were.
