In recent years, indigenous rights and their absence have become increasingly visible. Not because indigenous activists haven't been there, but because the public is now truly recognizing the struggle for their own language, identity, art, and culture.

This is also an issue that affects the Nordic countries. In June 2022, the Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut, and the Danish government issued a joint declaration to investigate the historical relations between the two countries. In June 2023, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission delivered its report to the Norwegian Parliament.

However, there is a long way from beautiful words to action, and the fight is far from over. There are many ways to engage in this struggle. Art and culture are important tools, perhaps even the fuel that gives us meaning and direction. How can one reclaim heritage through various cultural and artistic expressions?

About the film:

The documentary film TWICE COLONIZED follows the lawyer and activist Aaju Peters as she fights for indigenous visibility and rights in a world where colonialist structures are far from being a thing of the past. Born in Greenland, Aaju Peters was sent to Denmark at an early age, where she lost both her language and cultural identity. As an adult, she moved to the Arctic part of Canada and experienced the oppression of the Inuit there – being colonized for the second time. She uses her legal background to wage her battle.

There are many paths to the goal. We invite you to a conversation about indigenous activism, art, and culture. How can one use art and ensure that the pressure is maintained?

Focus: Indigenous People

In recent years, indigenous rights and their absence have come more and more into the spotlight. Not because indigenous activists haven't been there, but because the public is only now truly recognizing the struggle and becoming aware of the many challenges on the agenda. This year's focus section is dedicated to indigenous peoples in North America and the Nordic region, and it includes a blend of fiction and documentary works.
