Hospitals are tightening their operations, and maternity wards are being shut down. Is it possible to provide a safe and adequate birthing service when efficiency and prioritization must be the hospitals' main concerns? There is already a shortage of midwives, and it's projected to worsen. Even though there's a decrease in the number of births, is it still safe? And what will happen to the private sector when the public sector is being downsized?

We are examining the challenges of the maternity care system in Norway, particularly in Oslo, where several public birthing units and maternity wards have been closed recently. How do we ensure a stable, predictable, and high-quality birthing service for all women? One that provides security and quality in maternity care for women, children, and their loved ones?

The film MIDWIVES depicts the situation in France; do we face similar challenges in Norway?

About the film:

Two midwives, freshly graduated, struggle to keep their spirits up in the harsh working environment in Léa Fehner’s newest feature. MIDWIVES is an intense, heart-warming, and politically relevant drama set at a French maternity ward. There is no doubt that Léa Fehner wants to champion the French midwives' cause with her film. It is a no-frills, honest, and deeply human portrait of one of the most difficult, yet essential positions in healthcare.
