Small Town Curtains’ story revolves around the lives of five grown siblings after the sudden death of their father. Björn is the youngest of the five, and the closest the film gets to having a protagonist. After seeing a video message from his deceased father, Björn decides to confront his greatest fear: public speaking. In other words, the film deals with weaknesses we can all struggle with at times, and the strenuous journey towards life’s small victories. At the same time, Small Town Curtains is a grand and rich tapestry of a film that embraces the everyday lives and events of ordinary people in a provincial Swedish town. It might be thematically approachable and thoroughly riveting, but its form is what sets it apart from anything you’ve ever seen before. Director Johan Löfstedt has let a large part of his own family play versions of themselves in the film, and the end result is an elegant and innovative mix of fiction and documentary. JSR
